Swiftwater Forest Preserve, August 11, 2024

This summer has been unbearable with the heat and humidity. I’m afraid with global climate change, this may be our new normal. But today it was a little cooler and we took advantage of the favorable weather and got out for a hike at Swiftwater Forest Preserve in Paradise Township. I love this short hike for its coniferous forest and soft, pine needle-covered trails. It’s a mellow hike and today there were so many mushrooms to look at. We had heavy rains this week, but the trails were mostly dry and not too buggy. We took our time exploring and enjoying the fresh morning air.

Swiftwater Forest Preserve, Short Loop Hike in the Snow, February 6, 2022

Swiftwater Forest Preserve, Short Loop Hike in the Snow, February 6, 2022

Swiftwater Forest Preserve in Paradise Township is a very quite, very beautiful short loop in and out of tall white pines and hemlock trees. It was still pretty cold out this weekend, but the sun was shining and the snow was frozen enough to need light traction to keep from slipping. We hiked the short loop around the preserve which is just about 2.5 miles, stopping for a moment by the chimney to watch the white pines sway in the wind. Many times when I’m hiking, I like to stop, feel my feet connect to the earth and observe the stillness of my surroundings. There’s a lot to be learned from what you find in the forest, and today these wise old trees had a lot to say. After a short meditation, we headed back around the loop and headed home feeling at peace having and such a beautiful day.

A walk around Swiftwater Forest Preserve, April 25, 2021

A walk around Swiftwater Forest Preserve, April 25, 2021

It was a rainy start to our Sunday morning, so we waited for the rain to stop before heading out about mid-morning into the Pocono Mountains. Our destination this time was Swiftwater Forest Preserve in Paradise Township. We found the trailhead off Donaldson Road and made our way onto the trail into a beautiful forest of pine. The soft pine needles covering the ground were like walking on a soft carpet. It was a really nice feeling after traversing all the rocks on the AT the day before. The walk through the forest was nice and easy. Along the trail I noticed many different kinds of mushrooms and blooming wildflowers. We passed through a section of mixed hardwood with Shagbark Hickory, Maple and Oak. There were also some interesting rock outcroppings. After hiking around the inner loop trail, we followed the outer loop. Along this path we found a short spur which lead to an old chimney and a fireplace that must have been part of a cabin at some point long ago. There was also an old out house that had been left behind. The forest here was quiet, peaceful and so relaxing. It was a perfect hike for a lazy Sunday.
